"Out of the strong came forth sweetness"

My family's lineage comes from Indian indentured labourers in Jamaica. Through exploration of traditional mark making, etching and print techniques used during the colonial era, I used the logo of the world’s oldest brand Lyle’s Golden syrup; which is emblazoned on tins of Golden Syrup and Treacle: 'Out of the strong came forth sweetness' alongside a lion's carcass being fed on by bees, as the starting point for interrogation of pre and post colonial representations and how this fits into current disparities in power and privilege in post colonial society for Diasporic communities.

I have moved away from photography as my sole means of expression. In this body of work I have experimented with  texiles, sculpture, print; relief and intaglio, charcoal drawing and oil painting.
