First Waves: Exploring the impact of the UK Race Relations Acts
I was commissioned as Artist in Residence at the UK Houses of Parliament, to exploring the impact of the introduction of the UK Race Relations Acts 1968. I worked with BAME communities in Glasgow, Cardiff, Swansea, Leeds, Liverpool, Nottingham, Thamesmead and Leeds, to reflect on and celebrate the growth of an inclusive democracy and champion the communities who campaigned and fought for the changes in legislation.
The Bulb represents Light, Hope and Optimism
The Parchment represents Legislation, Law and Government
The Pen represents Education, Action and Protest
The Red Ribbon represents Community, Unity and Blood ties
Semiotics is the study of meaning-making and meaningful communication. To do this I chose four objects that could be used as symbols. I wanted to ensure that in each of the portraits the sitters voice was clear, so that we could establish a real dialogue between the communities they were from and Parliament about the impact of the legislation. By creating a safe space during our workshops, I was able to facilitate the most powerful way to convey their messages. Shooting digitally allowed us to look at the images whilst shooting to ensure that the meaning was conveyed as they wanted it and not how I the saw it. Jointly we worked through different compositions to get the most truthful outcome.
